One of the best ways to do your bit for the environment is to get out of the car and onto your bike for short journeys around your neighbourhood. There are loads of little journeys you can make that don’t really necessitate using the car. Moreover, riding your bike around is really good for your health.

However, it’s a little bit difficult if you don’t actually have a bike and you don’t have the ready cash to get one. Fortunately, wink bingo has a promotion on at the moment geared towards getting people on their bikes.

The Wheely Big £1k promotion at wink bingo is all about giving you the chance to win a cool grand so that you can spend it on bikes for the family. This is a great investment because it will help you keep you and your family active and it will reduce your carbon footprint so that your personal impact on the environment becomes significantly less.

Wink bingo is not the only place you can win cash. Other bingo site release new promotions all the time and if you want to be at the cutting edge of what’s available then ohmybingo.com is the place to go.

An article in the Daily Mail recently highlights a family of super-green recyclers, the Strauss family from Longhope in Gloucestershire, who threw away just one carrier bag full of waste all year.

Richard and Rachelle Strauss and their daughter Verona made a concerted effort throughout 2010 to reuse or recycle every bit of waste they possibly could. This involved buying food products with minimum or no packaging, composting all food waste and recycling everything in sight.

At the end of the year, all they threw away was a small bag containing used pens, broken toys, photo negatives and razor blades.

This is an extreme example of eco-living perhaps, but it is an inspiring one nonetheless.

New cars that come onto the market tend to have much greater fuel economy than their predecessors and this is something we ought to take advantage of.

This is one of the only times when doing what is ethical is also the easiest thing to do. Remember, better fuel economy is not only good for the environment, it also saves you money. Lowering your carbon footprint is a great way of solving both your financial and ecological concerns.

Every other Wednesday, I put my numerous recycling bins out, and over the last year or so, the number of boxes, bags and bins allocated to me by my Council has increased – I now have 6! A wheelie bin for “general waste”, a food bin, a paper bag, a glass and metal box, a plastic box and a garden waste bin. Oh, and my Mum has all of these plus an ash bin (she lives in the country and has a real log fire).

I was thinking that I will have to put them all out tonight, and it got me thinking – that amount of plastic is very useful to those of us that recycle. But to those that do not, surely this is a total waste? The viscous cycle is that if they weren’t there, noone would use them anyway, and if they are there at least people have the option.

I do like the way other countries enforce recycling upon their inhabitants; I think that this is the way forward.

In this day and age, there is now an organic option for everything, from toilet paper and cosmetics to cars and clothes. By sourcing and manufacturing items from an environmentally and socially sustainable source. So “going green” isn’t all about recycling, it is also about knowing how you items are made, and avoiding those that support sweat shops and child labour.

It is not an easy task to do, but there are more and more companies that are starting to plug this particular hole in the market. I have my doubts about a lot of these companies, but it is certainly a worthwhile cause. The main problem that these sorts of businesses have not taken off more, is that in our economically hit country, people are far keener to save money by buying it cheap, making the high street discount stores more and more profitable.

So maybe some day, enough people will stand up and make the statement that we should only buy green, but I think it is a long way off yet.

On my journey back home from work yesterday, I was disgusted by the amount of litter that had been thrown onto the road side. Numerous fast food bags and plastic bottles covered the grass verge, do people not realise what effect this could have on the environment?

Obviously, some people are oblivious to the problems that litter can cause. The increase in vermin and bacteria is just one problem along with the danger it can be to wildlife. Plastic, for example, can be a major threat to birds, they can think that it is food and then end up choking on it, resulting in death.

If we all disposed of our litter properly then the world would not only be a cleaner, but a happier place. Don’t you agree?

Today is blog action day, where thousands are writing articles online to promote the issue of climate change.

Blog Action Day is an annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion.

It will help October 15th 2009 become the largest online social event. At the time of writing there are roughly, 8,409 Blogs participating.

There are many solutions that will do a little help to some of the issues we face in the modern world. For example, reducing transport – the more cars you have, the more journeys you take, the more damage you are doing. Look at walking to the local store, buy a bike, or use public transport.

They are one of the most magnificent creatures on planet earth. But sadly, we are seeing far less of them now.

Because according to new research, polar bears have shrunk over the last century. The scientists compared bear skulls from the early 20th Century with those from the second half of the century and found that the more recent skulls were between two and nine per cent smaller.

The change in size could be linked to pollution and the reduction in sea ice which makes it more difficult for the bears to find food.

We all know the effects that our pollution is having on us, but these polar bears are innocent victims of our behaviour. They don’t deserve this treatment. So make a change today and save our bears.

The meetings will underline the chief African demand for compensation for damages caused by global warming and it comes before the UN talks which will take place in Copenhagen in December.

The meeting will address the fact that Africa needs special help as it has the lowest emissions of carbon dioxide in the world but it will suffer the worst impacts. The meeting will hopefully result in key ideas on the way forward on climate for Africa so that the continent can be represented by one delegation in Copenhagen.

The effects of climate change are continuously emerging. The most recent news is that conkers have started to appear on trees already. This is two weeks earlier than usual.

So how can we help stop the effects of climate change? Well there are hundreds of small changes you can make and here are just a few of them:

•	Energy saving light bulbs can cut the cost of your electricity bill. They last ten times longer and use up to four times less energy.

•	Don’t leave electrical appliances on standby. Leaving your television or sound system on standby means that they are still using up electricity so switch the appliance off at the mains.

•	Take a shower instead of a bath as this could save you 400 litres a week.

•	Don’t overfill the kettle when making hot drinks – only use what you will need.

•	Only use your washing machine or dishwasher when you have a full load. Otherwise, you will waste both water and energy.
