The Welsh Assembly Government’s (WAG’s) Sustainability Committee has produced a report claiming that the country’s fragile eco-systems are potentially at risk due to a lack of government action and resources.

The report was commissioned in response to a petition from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), who called for an examination into the reasons why the government’s targets on halting the loss of biodiversity had been missed.

As well as accusing the government of lacking the political will to follow through on its pledges, the RSPB also recommended that a series of actions be taken by the WAG in order to restore the country’s lost biodiversity.

Consumer electronics giant Apple has reportedly come under fire from a coalition of the most influential environmental groups in China.

The campaigners – who call themselves the Green Choice Initiative – accuse Apple of numerous infringements on environmental and workers regulations. Their allegations include pollution, poor working conditions, toxic fumes harming worker’s health and the dumping of environmentally damaging waste.

Apple has refused to issue any direct comment on the accusations, citing confidentiality as the reason for its silence.

The green coalition has issued a recent report analysing the company’s responses and transparency when it comes to accusations that Apple is responsible for damaging environmental practices.

The London 2012 Olympics promised a great deal in terms of green operations, but it looks as though organisers will not meet the environmental pledges they originally aimed for.

Going for Green – a new environmental report on the Games has suggested that organisers will have to do much more work in the coming months to ensure they meet the ecological targets they originally planned.

The report has outlined shortcomings regarding the number of electric vehicles procured for the event and concerns surrounding renewable electricity.

Darren Johnson, chairman of the Environment Committee, said:

We fully support London 2012’s ambition to be the most sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games in recent history, and there has been some excellent work towards that goal.

However we don’t want to see environmental standards compromised in the run-up to what I am sure will be a fantastic Games.

We need to see clear targets for re-using temporary materials, more detail on how organisers will promote sustainable travel and plans for recycling facilities on site and around London.

As a country girl at heart, I believe that the great outdoors has a massive impact upon my life – it is where food comes from, it is where I go to relax, it is where I could earn a living – it impacts up on all areas of my life, and I choose to protect that as much as I can.

Now, for a city boy, such as my partner, that is not necessarily the first thought he has. He sees the green belt around our town and thinks “people need affordable housing, build them there, what can it hurt?”.

I see this as damaging to our way of life – this space is vital to our ongoing survival, not just from a resources point of view, but from a psychological point of view as well. Less space = cranky people. Looking after the natural world, in all ways, helps keep people in tip top condition.

With the increase in petrol prices, and the growing congestion on our roads, everyone is trying to find ways yo cut their car usage – but few think of not using it at all!

The morning school run is one of the key trips of the day, and in a lot of cases, families have chosen homes based on their ability to get their kids into a good local school – so why not make use of the school buses, or walk the kids to school?

A friend of mine has a 7 year old, and as part of their “save the environment” awareness, the school asked parents to walk their children to school today – and most of them did! By teaching them from a young age, we will hopefully encourage the next generation to look after their environments.

Over the last couple of years, there have been numerous studies and articles published regarding the reasons behind the falling bee population. There are numerous theories, but very few hard facts. The theories range from viruses and bacterial pathogens to increase in pests. Scientists take time to find data and draw conclusions within their studies, and so it will take time to find out which theory is correct, or even if all of them are correct and affect different areas in different ways.

But will we ever know? What kind of impact will this have? I can’t see the demise of the bees having the impact and longevity that the dinosaurs did, however, I’m sure that there absence will be felt in some way.

On my journey back home from work yesterday, I was disgusted by the amount of litter that had been thrown onto the road side. Numerous fast food bags and plastic bottles covered the grass verge, do people not realise what effect this could have on the environment?

Obviously, some people are oblivious to the problems that litter can cause. The increase in vermin and bacteria is just one problem along with the danger it can be to wildlife. Plastic, for example, can be a major threat to birds, they can think that it is food and then end up choking on it, resulting in death.

If we all disposed of our litter properly then the world would not only be a cleaner, but a happier place. Don’t you agree?

Today is blog action day, where thousands are writing articles online to promote the issue of climate change.

Blog Action Day is an annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion.

It will help October 15th 2009 become the largest online social event. At the time of writing there are roughly, 8,409 Blogs participating.

There are many solutions that will do a little help to some of the issues we face in the modern world. For example, reducing transport – the more cars you have, the more journeys you take, the more damage you are doing. Look at walking to the local store, buy a bike, or use public transport.
